  3.     First Communication from an Extraterrestrial Civilization?

  11.                            Abstract
  12.  
  13.      In 1976 an unmanned NASA Viking spacecraft successfully 
  14. photographed the surface of the planet Mars.  In the subsequent 
  15. 13 years, a mystery has loomed . . . a mile-long, 1500-ft high 
  16. humanoid "face" discovered in a northern Martian desert called 
  17. "Cydonia."  Initially dismissed by NASA as "a trick of light and 
  18. shadow," new analysis presented here reveals a far more complex 
  19. situation, and a far more significant conclusion:
  20.  
  21.      The "face" and its surrounding "enigmatic landforms" appear 
  22. to be a carefully layed out, highly-sophisticated, redundantly 
  23. encoded "mathematical and geometric CETI message" on the Martian 
  24. landscape -- in the tradition of century-old proposals by Gauss, 
  25. Lockyer, et al..
  26.  
  27.      This paper presents the evidence whereby the authors have 
  28. reached this "radical conclusion."  We -- one of us a former NASA
  29. consultant, the other a geomorphologist -- detail the extensive 
  30. geodedic and mathematical analysis of "the Face" we have 
  31. conducted over the past several years: specifically, its 
  32. geometric relationship to other, equally enigmatic objects in the
  33. immediate vicinity.  This evidence includes multiple appearances 
  34. of two specific mathematical constants: "e" and "pi," derived by 
  35. angular measurement of the placement of key morphological objects
  36. around the "face" and the discovery of redundant angles and 
  37. derived constants from that placement.  We have also discovered 
  38. the two constants -- "e" and "pi" -- "coded" in the geodedic 
  39. siting latitude of the "complex" on the planet.
  40.  
  41.      It is this multiple, diversified, but converging geodedic, 
  42. geometric and mathematical evidence that, in the authors' 
  43. opinion, now robustly supports the "radical conclusion" presented
  44. above.
  45.  
  46.      The geometry and mathematical constants we have discovered 
  47. at Cydonia appear to be a highly-specific communication of 
  48. "embedded tetrahedral geometry."  It's apparent purpose: the 
  49. geometric

  58. prediction of a specific geodedic latitude -- 19.5 degrees N. and
  59. S. -- resulting from the location of the vertices of a 
  60. "circumscribed tetrahedran" rotated inside a planetary or stellar
  61. sphere.   This conclusion is reinforced by the geomorphological 
  62. observation of a major "tetrahedral pyramid" at Cydonia -- 
  63. connected geometrically (by a 19.5-degree angle offset to the 
  64. local geodedic meridian) to equally obvious morphological 
  65. representations of "spheres" at Cydonia itself.
  66.  
  67.      The purpose of all this appears to be to direct attention 
  68. towards "something occurring at these two specific planetary 
  69. latitudes."  When examined by the authors, using published 
  70. geodedic planetary maps from NASA and U.S Geological Survey 
  71. sources, these latitudes are observed to be associated with a 
  72. hitherto unknown planetary and stellar energy phenomenon -- 
  73. blatantly emerging at these specific latitudes -- on astronomical
  74. objects all across the solar system, including the Sun.  Further,
  75. the appearance of these "energy outpourings" seems to be 
  76. modulated by the polarity of the planetary (or stellar) magnetic 
  77. dipole moment -- raising, in the author's minds, the possibility 
  78. that the "message" is attempting to direct us to a verifiable 
  79. astrophysical manifestation of a basic, "unified field," 
  80. connecting planetary angular momentum, gravity, and 
  81. electromagnetism with surface energy release.
  82.  
  83.      The possibility that "the message" is directing us to, not 
  84. merely energy transfer but energy generation, is also considered 
  85. in this paper.  Several convergent observations of the outer 
  86. planets, most recently from Voyager 2, are presented to buttress 
  87. our contention that we may be looking at a new astrophysically-
  88. significant form of energy.  Evidence is also presented that some
  89. manifestations of this energy may be altering the local 
  90. "gravitational space-time metric" -- consistant with current 
  91. theoretical interpretations of tetrahedral mathematics by 
  92. specialists, as "representative of higher-dimensional n-spaces."
  93.  
  94.      The implications of these "real world" geophysical 
  95. manifestations of "unified field tetrahedral mathematics" -- 
  96. specific, localized energy release on planetary surfaces, 
  97. apparently unrecognized until the "Cydonia tetrahedral 
  98. mathematics" were decoded by the authors -- are profound: ranging
  99. from a possible breakthrough in the centuries-long search for a 
  100. Unified Field Theory connecting the four elemental forces of 
  101. Nature; to possible technological applications of this knowledge 
  102. -- including a new energy source, and possibly, ultimate control 
  103. of gravity itself.

  105.      We conclude by urging immediate verification of the "Cydonia
  106. Message," via the 1992 unmanned Mars Observer spacecraft, as well
  107. as detailed follow-up to our preliminary work presented here.
